Do we really need 8 glasses of water a day? The short answer is no! But that would make for a very short blog post, so let's hydrate the facts:

1. It seems that the advice to drink 8 glasses of water a day is more rumour than fact. No one really knows where the idea comes from, it isn't backed up by any scientific research.
I wonder if the rumour started about the same time that bottled water became popular?

2. The general rule of hydration is that if your urine output isn't pale yellow, you need to drink more fluids. If you are drinking more and your urine is still not pale yellow, a trip to the doctor should be considered.

3. Good hydration flushes out toxins and keeps your insides happy. If you are feeling under the weather, make sure you keep drinking clear fluids to help clear your system of any nasties. If you are suffering a hangover or have sickness/diarrhoea, you will need to replace electrolytes - flat cola is ideal.

4. Dehydration is bad for your skin - drinking enough water is just as good as that expensive moisturiser. A layer of Vaseline will help your skin retain moisture in adverse weather or if you are swimming in a pool with chemicals.

In conclusion - you don't necessarily need 8 glasses of water a day. Drink what you need - your body will tell you what the right amount is and that may change from day to day.
