Madonna at 60: is living quietly behind the pop queen's success?

by Jennifer Powis

Madonna very recently celebrated her 60th birthday. This pop icon and queen of reinvention is one of the most recognisable figures the world over. She's used to making a great deal of noise, both in the press and in the music charts, but could aspects of living quietly nestled permanently in the background be one of the reasons for her continued success?

Dig a little deeper to look past the incredible persona and you discover a passion for reading books, going for walks and horse riding. This musical superstar knows the importance of stepping out of the limelight to get some much-needed downtime, indulging in her favourite hobbies and pastimes to take refuge from the media circus.

There's no denying that she's looking pretty fabulous for 60 - perhaps aspects of quiet living can take the credit?

She flaunted her incredible figure to the world when she once again reinvented her image for her Confessions on a Dance Floor album. No-one could fail to be wowed when she appeared on TV screens wearing THAT leotard and fishnets.

It's blatantly clear that the famous songstress puts a strong emphasis on taking care of both body and mind. After all, the two are most inextricably linked.

One of her most famous loves may well hold the secret to her obvious triumphs of mind and body, happiness and health. Back in 1998 speaking to Oprah, Madonna reveals her love for Ashtanga yoga and why she left the gym behind in favour of this practice. Perhaps this description and the comparison she makes between yoga and life are the real reasons why yoga is becoming increasingly popular with all ages.

"Yoga is a metaphor for life - you have to take it really slowly, you can't rush through it, you can't skip to the next position...you can't judge yourself, you just have to breathe, you have to let go...and it's a very slow process, but it is a workout for your mind, your body and your soul".

And maybe that's the real takeaway here: you can be the most successful person on the planet, with millions of dollars in the bank and an A-List lifestyle, but taking the time to put your mind, your body and your soul first is the real basis for a happy and healthy life. If yoga is good enough for this megastar, then it's certainly good enough for us.

Happy Birthday, Madonna!
